The well-prepared healthcare administrative assistant has options. Depending upon the facility, they may be involved in many areas: receptionist, filing, medical records, transcription, and medical manuscript typing, insurance, general secretarial duties such as correspondence, scheduling, bookkeeping, and ordering supplies. A healthcare administrative assistant can enter the field as a receptionist and work up to office manager or supervisor. A healthcare administrative assistant may also advance to an administrative assistant position for one or two physicians in which he/she is in complete charge of the entire office and all of its personnel. The U.S. Department of Labor has ranked medical administrative assistant/transcription jobs among the top 25 fastest growing jobs in their Occupational Outlook Handbook.
