Graduating practical nursing students are eligible to sit for the National Council Licensure Examination for Practical Nurses (NCLEX-PN). Passing this exam demonstrates the competency to work as an LPN.
LPNs provide basic nursing care such as focused assessments, medication administration, patient monitoring and reporting. They discuss health care with patients and report the status of patients to registered nurses and doctors. Licensed practical nurses have been identified by the U.S Department of Labor as a high growth career through 2026.

Daily responsibilities (varies based on the work environment)
- Provide for the basic comfort of patients, such as helping them bathe or dress across the life span
- Obtain and monitor vitals including blood pressure, pulse, heart rate, and temperature
- Administer basic patient care, including changing bandages and inserting catheters
- Perform medication administration by various routes including by mouth, topical medications, and injections
- Discuss the care they are providing with patients and listen to their concerns
- Report patients’ status and concerns to registered nurses and doctors
- Keep records on patients’ health
