Activity Consultant Mentoring Course

Description

This Activity Consultant course will provide a hands-on approach to the consulting basics of becoming an activity manager and/or consultant.  Topics covered include ethical decision making, managing an activity department, developing business plans for consulting, communication skills, roles and responsibilities of consultants, and regulatory issues in healthcare.  To participate in the ACC Mentoring program for certification, the candidate must be NCCAP certified in good standing, willing to complete all aspects of the ACC Mentoring process, work independently, able to complete the process in the designated time frame, and be willing to critique the process upon completion.  (2 credits online)

Course Delivery

This course will be delivered online using Desire2Learn (D2L) learning management system.  Students are expected to have high speed internet, a computer in good working order with a camera and microphone, and current software such as Microsoft Windows.

Course Learning Objectives

  1. Identify the necessary knowledge and skills for being an activity manager/consultant
  2. Explain regulatory laws and issues affecting healthcare industry
  3. Identify organizational structure
  4. Identify elements of management for the activity department
  5. Identify effective training and teaching techniques for the adult learner
  6. Describe methods to evaluate the operation and management of an activity department
  7. Describe role and responsibilities of an activity consultant
  8. Identify the business aspect of being a consultant

Course Length

2 credits delivered over 2 semesters (32 weeks)

  • Fall semester: 1 credit, Chapters 1-25
  • Spring semester: 1, credit, Chapters 26-44

Course Materials and Textbook

The Professional Activity Manager and Consultant (1996) by Anne D’Antonio-Nocera, Nancy DeBolt, & Nadine Touhey.  Available through Idyll Arbor.

Other course materials are provided in Desire2Learn (D2L) course management system.
