Public invited to artist reception, exhibit at Ridgewater
January 17, 2023
Ridgewater College will host an art gallery talk, reception and exhibit on the Willmar campus. The talk and reception are set for 2:00 p.m. this Thursday, January 19 in the Ridgewater Willmar campus theater in the Fine Arts Building.
Artist and Minnesota State Colleges instructor Gregory Rose will share insights regarding his piece, “Out of the Dark and Into the Light,” which was inspired by a trip to Africa. In his gallery talk, he will highlight how community informs his practice.
Rose, an East Coast native now transplanted to Minnesota, received his Master of Fine Arts from the University of Minnesota with a concentration in drawing and painting. He has exhibited in New York, Pennsylvania, Wisconsin, as well as Italy, Mexico and Africa.
Rose has been a creative force working in music, providing voiceovers in commercials; participating in the fine arts, art education and community engagement; and serving on the Soo Visual Arts Center Curatorial Board in Minneapolis.
“Out of the Darkness and Into the Light” is work derived from re- entering the world with a more open eye to how post-traumatic stress disorder (PSTD), trauma, and life experience have informed his creative process and projects. He has responded to current social and ethnic shifts within the Black experience and the ingrained community elements found in Black culture and history.
This free event and exhibit are sponsored by the Ridgewater Fine Arts Gallery Exhibitions and Ridgewater Office of Diversity, Equity and Inclusion. The exhibit will remain open through February 17 in the Ridgewater College Willmar Art Gallery which is open 8:00 a.m.-5:00 p.m. Monday through Friday.
