I began working in the Health Information Management field at HealthPartners in St. Paul after attending the medical secretarial program at St. Paul College. My education continued with the HIT program at Rochester Community and Technical College. Eventually, I obtained my BS from Metropolitan State University. I’m a first-generation college student who always worked full-time while attending school, so I have a lot of empathy for students who have busy schedules.
Career-wise, I began as a transcriptionist, processed requests for health records, analyzed charts, did medical coding, became a business analyst, and eventually was promoted to HIM director. I enjoy helping students grow and succeed. Being flexible and adapting to change is a must in the fast-paced world of healthcare. I’m never bored with my work, and since I love to learn, the opportunities for ongoing learning in the HIM profession is one of my favorite aspects of this career field.
