Ridgewater Adds New Programs and Accelerated Trainings
April 25, 2024
WILLMAR and HUTCHINSON, MN – Ridgewater College is adding two credit-based healthcare programs this summer as well as three accelerated, short-term trainings in welding, carpentry and limited-power systems to meet industry needs.
Health Care Programs
Radiologic technologists use various imaging technologies such as X-ray, computed tomography (CT), magnetic resonance imaging (MRI), and mammography to help diagnose injury or illness. A cohort of students will begin the in-demand, two-year Radiologic Technologist program in Willmar in May.
“We are restarting our Radiologic Technologist program after 12 years, using a unique partnership with CentraCare-Rice Memorial Hospital,” explained Mary Leyk, Ridgewater dean of allied health programs. “We have accepted our first cohort of students to start this summer.” Applications came in from communities near and far.
The admissions process for this full-time, in-person program is competitive. Students must complete the 18 credits of prerequisite general education courses before applying for the program.
“This is another healthcare option for Ridgewater College students that is high-tech as well as high-touch care,” Leyk explained. “The career offers great job stability and a very good wage.”
The second program is brand new at Ridgewater. Patient Access Representative is an entry-level, 24-credit certificate program available fully online beginning summer also. Graduates of the program will handle initial interactions between patients and healthcare facilities, such as registration, insurance verification, scheduling, and billing communications.
“Our advisory committee helped to identify the need for patient access representatives, so we are adding the certificate to help address the current workforce shortage,” explained Ridgewater’s Matt Feuerborn, dean of instruction. “Industry needs individuals with a solid foundation in medical terminology and medical office procedures to help be that first point of contact when a patient has a need.” This career is for people who are detail-oriented, compassionate, and interested in helping others access healthcare without necessarily being in direct physical contact with patients.
“Students who wish to advance in medical office administrative support roles beyond Patient Access can carry these credits into the Healthcare Administrative Assistant Diploma or AAS Degree to open even greater opportunities,” Feuerborn added.
Short-term, Accelerated Training
Ridgewater’s Customized Training and Continuing Education (CTCE) Department will offer three new entry-level, accelerated training programs this summer, tailored to provide foundational skills for high-demand careers.
“Designed for beginners and career changers alike, these intensive programs offer hands-on training led by industry experts in welding, carpentry, and limited-energy (like that used in security systems and telecommunications),” according to Sam Bowen, dean of CTCE. With a focus on foundational skills, these trainings are suitable for individuals with little to no prior experience in the industries.
Welding: This four-week, 120-hour training provides instruction in basic welding techniques, safety procedures, and equipment operation. Participants will experience hands-on training in a supportive environment, gaining the skills and confidence to pursue entry-level positions in construction, manufacturing, and fabrication. Begins June 17 in Buffalo, Monday-Friday.
Limited-Energy Systems: Participants learn fundamental concepts in low-voltage wiring, security systems installation, and telecommunications infrastructure during this six-week, hands-on training with industry-standard equipment. This training not only equips individuals to pursue careers as limited-energy technicians, but also lays the foundation for further education, enabling them to progress to roles as power-limited technicians or electricians. Beginning on June 17 in Hutchinson, sessions will be held on Mondays and Wednesdays.
Carpentry: Individuals with a passion for craftsmanship and a desire to work in construction can gain foundational skills in basic carpentry techniques in this six-week training. Through hands-on instruction and practical projects, participants will learn framing, finishing, and cabinetry. Begins June 20 in Willmar, Thursdays and Fridays.
