Commercial Driver Training (CDL)

Get on the road to a rewarding career in transportation. Ridgewater College’s Commercial Driver’s License (CDL) program—delivered through Customized Training—is designed to meet all Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration (FMCSA) Entry-Level Driver Training (ELDT) requirements.
Our flexible training model combines self-paced online learning with hands-on, behind-the-wheel instruction, so you’ll be ready to pass your Minnesota CDL exams and start driving with confidence.
Our program is comprised of two individual classes:
CDL Knowledge and Theory:
This portion of the CDL training program is delivered 100% online, and will cover the 30+ core curriculum areas identified by the Department of Transportation. Students will explore the knowledge components of commercial motor vehicle operation in short modules, with assessments at the end of each section. This, along with additional online resources, will prepare students to take and pass the MN written CDL permit exam.
CDL Road and Range:
Upon completion of the Knowledge and Theory course, and issuance of a driver’s permit, students will be scheduled for the road and range portion of the training program. This 30-hour, one-on-one training will involve use of our CDL simulator, trucks and trailers. Training will take place on our approved range, as well as our established road course. Our course is designed to provide students with the skills necessary to drive both manual and automatic transmissions. Successful students will be able to demonstrate competency in all areas of vehicle operation assessed by the standard MN CDL A driver’s examination, including pre-trip inspection, shifting, backing maneuvers, turning, parallel parking, emergencies, extreme driving conditions, logbooks, load securement and more! Students will train in 4-hour blocks and will utilize a college truck and instructor to schedule and take the driving exam.
Students must successfully complete all prerequisites, including having a valid Class A driving permit, obtain a DOT physical card, pass drug/alcohol screening, and be cleared by Ridgewater College to drive state vehicles.
