Train Manual or Automatic Choose your path:
Learn on an automatic or manual transmission. Manual training qualifies you for an unrestricted Class A CDL.
Our program is comprised of two individual classes:
CDL Knowledge and Theory:
This portion of the CDL training program is delivered 100% online, and will cover the 30+ core curriculum areas identified by the Department of Transportation. Students will explore the knowledge components of commercial motor vehicle operation in short modules, with assessments at the end of each section. This, along with additional online resources, will prepare students to take and pass the MN written CDL permit exam.
CDL Road and Range:
Upon completion of the Knowledge and Theory course, and issuance of a driver’s permit, students will be scheduled for the road and range portion of the training program. Our CDL proficiency-based training is delivered within one of two FMCSA-compliant programs: Entry-Level Driver Training (ELDT) for new drivers and an Experienced Driver Program for those seeking advanced skills. Training incorporates the use of our approved CDL simulator, range, and road course, as well as hands-on instruction with trucks and trailers. All activities occur on facilities and routes that meet state and federal safety standards. Our curriculum is designed to ensure drivers demonstrate proficiency in operating both manual and automatic transmissions, consistent with Minnesota and federal requirements for commercial motor vehicle operation. Successful students will be able to demonstrate competency in all areas of vehicle operation assessed by the standard MN CDL A driver’s examination, including pre-trip inspection, shifting, backing maneuvers, turning, parallel parking, emergencies, extreme driving conditions, logbooks, load securement and more! Students will train in 4-hour blocks and will utilize a college truck and instructor to schedule and take the driving exam.
Students must successfully complete all prerequisites, including having a valid Class A driving permit, obtain a DOT physical card, pass drug/alcohol screening, and be cleared by Ridgewater College to drive state vehicles.
